0x08 Binary Exploitation
Last updated: Nov 18, 2020

This meetup was all about binary exploitation. Our community member Alexandru took us through Assembly, Shell Code and Buffer overflows. We looked at the basics of assemblies, the registers that you will commonly find and how a C program translates to assembly.
After the presentation we had a small quiz. Just to do something different then listening to technical talks and to determine who should get some prizes. In the end we were able to give away 3 VIP passes and a 1 month Pro Labs subscription. The winner of the Pro Labs was a first time visitor!
Since we switched from Zoom to Discord these types of direct interactions are a little bit difficult. The main issue here is the delay in the broadcast that causes the timer to run out before people get to answer the question. We are trying to figure out the best way to do these types of events in a way that everybody can be accommodated.
The topic was a bit more technical then we normally have at the meetup. The workshop that followed had several people working together on figuring out how to use gdb
, how to install gef
and how to walk through the program. The willingness to help out, show patience and be open to newcomers is always heartwarming.
